The Teaching English in China Mentor List is a list of English teaching institutions in China with the names and email addresses of native English teachers who've worked at them. The people listed can be contacted to ask about their listed institution(s) - ask anything you like. All that's asked of anyone using the list is that they add themselves to the database. Details on how to do that are at the bottom of the list page.

How to contact a mentor.

If you have already taught English in China, please add yourself to the mentor list.

Mentors cannot give you work. Mentors can provide information about the school you are interested in working for.
Please DO NOT send CVs and job applications to people on this list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of institutions are featured?
The institutions featured on the list are those that have been submitted. Some are schools, some universities, some private institutions; anywhere English is taught in China that hires native English teachers can be included on the list. The list is neither black nor white; schools featured may be good, bad or indifferent. You can use it as a starting point for researching institutions at which to work or to find out more about a place with which you've already had contact. It's up to you.

What questions can I ask?
Anything you like! Different things are important to different people when they come to work in China. You can ask about terms and conditions; the friendliness of the staff; things to see in town; the availability of cheese; workplace mentors are there to answer any questions you might have. Remember, they've not only experienced the institutions but also the area. There's a lot they can tell you. While you can ask mentors almost anything, please DO NOT send mentors your C.V or ask for a job.

Why not post their opinions on the page?
Firstly, different people want to know different things. The information you want might not be in the information a mentor posts. Secondly, if you do decide to take up a post in an institution the mentor can be contacted for advice as the time approaches to go there - those 1001 questions that always arise and can't be anticipated. They'll also be available to answer any questions when you first arrive and feel lost. Thirdly, some may have things they want to say about the school they would prefer were said privately and not posted for everyone to read. The idea is to keep this as a 'living list', (thanks to Joan Gellatly for the phrase), rather than one with dead and outdated posts which might not even contain the information important to you.

Do I have to pay for this?
No, it's free. (Or at least it should be; if anyone tries charging you let me know so I can grab my share). Those listed are just people who've been through the confusion of coming to a new place in China and knowing nothing about it who want to make things a bit easier for others following in their footsteps.

Add yourself to the list!
Some web pages will bug you with ads. Others will open a plethora of unwanted windows. This site is mutual helpware; it's helping you, would like you to help back and will bug you (gently) to encourage you to do so. Please add your own name to the list if you have experience of teaching in China - if you've none now then when you have. Please please please submit your own information and help someone as someone is helping you.

How to contact a Mentor

If you are seeking information about a particular school you are welcome to contact the list mentors who have worked there. As mentors are volunteering their time to help you, please be considerate and polite when communicating with them.

To contact a mentor simply send an email to them with the following information:

	Subject Heading	Name of the school you are seeking information for.
	Body of email :	You introduce yourself (possibly include some information about your background) and ask the mentor your initial questions.

Please do not send CVs or ask mentors for a job in your initial email. Mentors are registered on this list to help you with information, they are not here as recruitment agents for the schools.

How to become a Mentor

If you have taught in China your experience could prove invaluable for others. Please add yourself to the list as a workplace mentor. To join the mentor list simply send the following information to mentorlist(a)gmail.com

Please do this for each of your places of work - good, bad or indifferent - even if they are already on the list; your experiences are still valuable.

There's no need to send me your experiences; it's for others to contact you and ask.
